Living Cities Tours

As part of the National Play Festival 2012 you can enjoy a new kind of immersive theatre.

Download the audio guided tour to your MP3 player, grab a map and wander some of Melbourne’s secret places, listen to their furtive stories and clandestine histories. This tour will take the form of a headphone journey, in which audiences follow a map whilst listening to a soundtrack of music, spoken word, poetry and sound, creating a multi-sensory experience.

This Audio Guided Tour will be the polished result of a five day workshop led by Owen Calvert-Lyons (Arcola Theatre) & Peter Higgin (Punchdrunk) some of Victoria’s most promising young writers will be introduced to a new quick-response model for making theatre.

Owen and Peter are coming to Melbourne as part of the Dickens 2012 anniversary supported by The British Council. They pioneered this technique in their previous show The Uncommercial Traveller inspired by Charles Dickens’ non-fiction account of his London wanderings. Dickens, an insomniac, walked the back-streets of London in the early hours of the morning, revealing parts of the city which remained hidden from public view.

Owen Calvert-Lyons
Owen manages Arcola Theatre’s Creative Learning department, creating genuinely radical opportunities for the people of Hackney to participate in the arts.

Peter Higgin
Pete is a founding member of Punchdrunk and has worked with the company throughout their current history including their shows Faust, Mask of the Red Death and the Duchess of Malfi.

This project is supported by The British Council and will draw the majority of its participants from emerging artists working with St. Martins Youth Arts, Courthouse Youth Arts, Express Media and Footscray Arts Centre.
